I am interested in knowing what others are going to do in the hours before the race.
My schedule will be:
4:00: Get up.
4:15: Eat medium bowl of oatmeal. Drink some Pokari Sweat (carbs). (No tea or coffee - diuretics).
Until 5:15: Read the paper, maybe take a walk outside.
5:15: Eat a piece of toast with jam, drink some more PS, drink a carbo gel (Weider Energy or Carbo Shotz. Have not tried the Carbo Shotz yet, will try one tomorrow to see how it sits in my stomach).
5:30: Shave and shower (to be Fully Awake).
6:00: Go to the bathroom, make final check of stuff to bring (including every possible piece of wear I might wear for the race).
6:35: Leave home.
7:30: Get to arranged meeting place.
As you can see, I will not eat much and will also not drink much. I like an empty stomach when I run and I definitely do not want to have to pee while I am running, which if I drink 2 or even 3 hours before I will have to. I will drink and eat more carbs during the race.

In my limited experience with big races, I find a banana (or 2), juice and coffee (diuretics be damned) for breakfast is ideal. Occasionally, I’ll have a small bowl of muesli with soymilk. Then, I eat an onigiri (umeboshi) two hours before the start. Rice is one of the easiest foods items for the body to digest and breakdown. I don't like to eat anything before a race with ingredients that can't be readily identified (no sports drinks, Weider, etc.). Once I start falling apart after 30K, I’ll eat try anything.
During the Ome Marathon I ate a Powerbar Energy Gel at 15K. It was my first time to try one, and initially it almost made me gag because it was so sweet and dense, much like the consistency of honey. On the other hand, it was easy to carry (I carried it in my glove) and every easy to open and eat.
I think I will bring two with me for the Tokyo Marathon, and I will only drink water (H2O has never let me down) during the race. Hopefully, some one will be passing out lemon wedges at the end.
I normally eat toast with honey (without butter) 2 hours before before leaving the house. I allow myself a cup of black straight tea to wake up. 1 hour before the gun I eat a banana. I'll make sure to drink one liter of water in total before the start. Maybe I take a gel as well but more important than the morning habbit is the carbo loading the night before. That's why I rather try to sleep as long as possible and don't care too much about what I eat in the morning. Less is more I think because we normally don't train the morning procedure, do we? Better no experiments at that stage. Since waking up early on a Sunday is nothing I am really used to I rather listen to my body than forcing some sort of food into my body. And under normal circumstances my body does not feel hungry at this time of the day. Greets, Ingo
